Sonic 2 was a major breakthrough for the Sonic series. It was an instant hit in international markets, and it established Sonic as a major franchise.
The story of Sonic 2 picks up months after Dr. Robotnik was banished to the mushroom planet and returns seeking revenge. He recruits a new ally in Knuckles the echidna. He also seeks to find the Master Emerald that is said to hold ultimate power.
Gameplay
123 movies sonic 2 continues the story of the blue hedgehog and his quest to save the world. This time around, the evil scientist Dr. Robotnik (voiced by Jim Carrey) is back on Earth and seeking to use Sonic’s super-speed powers to take over the world again.
In his search for the Master Emerald, Robotnik is assisted by a powerful anthropomorphic echidna named Knuckles. Despite his short temper, Knuckles is a fighter who will do anything to find the emerald for Dr. Eggman, and even goes so far as to sabotage Sonic’s home life with Tom and Maddie (Tika Sumpter and Colleen O’Shaughnessey).
The game has 11 levels spread throughout three zones: Emerald Hill, Sky Chase Zone and Oil Ocean Zone. These levels feature a variety of different obstacles and pitfalls. Some stages are more challenging than others, and some feature a “second chance” mechanic for players who fall off platforms. The game also features a co-op mode in which one player controls Sonic while another takes control of Tails.
Characters
The characters in Sonic 2 are a mix of classic game critters and human companions. The main villain is Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) who is a mad scientist with a big mustache and an obsession with taking over the world.
He has an assistant, Agent Stone (Lee Majdoub) who helps him. The two characters team up in the movie to find a Chaos Emerald that could provide them with Ultimate Power.
Meanwhile, the main hero, Sonic, has a new ally in Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey), a young fox with two tails who is also on a quest for the Emerald. They eventually meet up on West Side Island, where Dr. Robotnik has enacted an evil plan to steal the Emeralds and destroy all life on Earth.
The final battle between Sonic, Tails and Knuckles is one of the best battle scenes in the film. The three heroes combine their abilities and take on Eggman’s Death Egg Robot with ease, allowing them to defeat the villain.
Soundtrack
Sonic 2’s soundtrack is an instant jolt of fast-paced nostalgia. It’s a score that takes you back to your childhood and introduces the movie’s new characters Knuckles and Tails.
Tom Holkenborg, who composed the music for Sonic 1 and also worked on this film, brings his unique sound to this score. He composes 22 tracks for the film, all titled after key moments in the storyline.
He also has a number of new themes to choose from including one for the axed Hidden Palace Zone, a new Robotnik motif and a dramatic Knuckles theme. All together this soundtrack is very solid.
A limited run of audio cassette tapes featuring the film’s score are now available at Enjoy the Ride Records. Each of these is UV-printed with promotional artwork from the film printed directly on the tape. Head over to their website today to order yours!

After settling back in Green Hills, Montana, Sonic is ready for more freedom and agrees to go on a vacation with his human friends Tom Wachowski (James Marsden) and Maddie (Tika Sumpter). But when Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) returns to Earth with Knuckles the Echidna in search of a powerful Master Emerald, Sonic and Tails must race against time to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.
While Jeff Fowler, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, and Lee Majdoub return to their roles in the film, Idris Elba and Colleen O’Shaughnessey step into the shoes of Sonic’s other friends from the series – Tails and Knuckles. Those two characters are the heart of this movie, and it’s their return that makes Sonic 2 feel like a genuine fan favorite.
